Mogadishu (Sahan Post) :\u2014 Former Speaker of Parliament and Mohamed Mursal Sheikh Abdirahman has resigned as Deputy Chair and member of the National Development and Unity Party, citing political disagreements and a shift in the party\u2019s direction.<\/p>\n
In a resignation letter dated 21 November 2025, Mursal said the party\u2019s current political vision no longer aligned with his principles. \u201cI have decided to resign in order to maintain my political independence and focus freely on issues I believe are vital for the country\u2019s future,\u201d he wrote.<\/p>\n
His resignation follows a political agreement he signed in Nairobi with South West State President Abdiaziz Mohamed Hassan Laftagareen, a deal formally concluded in Mogadishu today, despite the two having previously held opposing political positions.<\/p>\n
The move highlights a broader reshuffling within South West State\u2019s political sphere, where Mursal, Laftagareen, and former Speaker Sharif Hassan Sheikh Aden, all key figures from the region, are repositioning themselves.<\/p>\n
The National Development and Unity Party, which includes Sharif Hassan among its senior members, emerged after elements of the former opposition bloc reached an understanding with the Federal Government. The party received official certification from the National Independent Electoral and Boundaries Commission in September 2025.<\/p>\n
Laftagareen\u2019s affiliation with the ruling Justice and Solidarity Party (JSP) places Mursal\u2019s exit within a wider landscape of shifting alliances, with analysts suggesting the developments could shape upcoming federal\u2013regional political negotiations.<\/p>\n
