New York – The United Nations Security Council has agreed to extend the mandate of the African Union Transition Mission in Somalia (ATMIS) until December 31, 2026.<\/p>\n
ATMIS is a peacekeeping mission under the African Union, established to support Somalia’s security transition, stabilize the country, and combat Al-Shabaab.<\/p>\n
Additionally, the Security Council decided that the United Nations Assistance Mission in Somalia (UNSOM) will begin a phased transition and close its mandate in October of next year.<\/p>\n
This decision signifies that UNSOM will continue to provide international support for Somalia’s security and political processes, while simultaneously creating a pathway for Somalia to fully assume management of the country’s governance and stability.<\/p>\n
