A fierce battle is currently ongoing between Puntland security forces and fighters from the ISIS group in Ceelka Il-Abbal, one of the most important strongholds of the ISIS group in the Cal Miskaad mountains.
Security officials we spoke to informed us that Puntland forces launched a planned attack on Ceelka Il-Abbal today. The location is strongly suspected to be the hideout of the deputy leader of the ISIS group in Somalia, Cabdiraxmaan Faahiye Ciise Maxamuud.
Ceelka Il-Abbal is a area with natural defensive formations and is considered one of the largest strongholds where ISIS militants are currently gathered. This area is located in the Qansaxdheere hills, close to the coastal villages of Buruc and Bacaad, which fall under the Bosaso district.
The strategic reason for ISIS’s choice of this location is believed to be its potential to help the group’s leaders and important members escape towards the sea if they are overwhelmed by the fighting in the Cal Miskaad mountains.
Security sources report that casualties have already been recorded in this battle, with bodies of ISIS members seen in the conflict areas. Puntland has not yet released detailed information regarding the operation.
