Somali Defense Minister Discusses Funding for New AUSSOM Mission in Italy

The Minister of Defense of Somalia, H.E. Ahmed Moallim Fiqi, is on an official visit to Italy, where he held an important meeting with the Minister of Defense of the Italian Republic, H.E. Guido Crosetto.

The meeting, which took place in Rome, focused on strengthening bilateral cooperation in defense, maritime security, the fight against terrorism, and the training and capacity building of the Somali National Armed Forces. A key topic of discussion was the funding of the new AUSSOM mission.

The two ministers underscored the importance of genuine cooperation based on shared interests and a long-term vision for the stability of the region.

They also affirmed their commitment to implementing joint projects under Italy’s Mattei Plan, which aims to enhance Italy’s cooperation with African nations.

Minister Ahmed Fiqi and his Italian counterpart reiterated the strengthening of the long-standing relations between Somalia and Italy, noting that this relationship is a solid foundation for efforts to enhance peace, security, and stability within Somalia and the broader Horn of Africa region.

The Somali Defense Minister’s visit was described as one that reinforces Italy’s role in supporting Somalia, particularly in the areas of security sector reform and the fight against terrorism.
