Stockholm (Sahan Post):- According to a report by Radio Sweden’s Science Department, tens of thousands of Swedes have chosen to donate their bodies to science after death.
At least four major Swedish universities currently store donated bodies for educational and research purposes. Monica Sandberg, who oversees the donation program at Uppsala University, told Radio Sweden that the institution presently holds files for around 1,500 registered donors who have pledged to give their bodies after they pass away.
Many of those who decide to donate their entire bodies, Sandberg explained, do so because they worry that aging or illness may make it impossible for them to donate specific organs. Instead, they choose to make a full-body donation to benefit science and education.
When asked what happens to these bodies, Sandberg said they are used by medical and surgical students for training, by researchers studying human anatomy, and by scientists investigating how the human body is structured and functions.
Additionally, cosmetic and reconstructive surgery programs also benefit from these donations, as the bodies are used to study tissue repair and restoration techniques that can improve surgical outcomes.
Hundreds of thousands of other Swedes, meanwhile, have opted to donate individual organs, such as hearts, kidneys, or livers, to help save or improve the lives of others in need of transplants.
