Mogadishu (Sahan Post) – The Commander of the Somali Navy and Coast Guard, Admiral Abdiwahab Abdullahi, together with experts from the Italian Hydrographic Institute (IIM), has officially launched a new initiative to establish and develop the Somali Oceano-Hydrographic Office (SOHO).
The new SOHO center will serve as Somalia’s national hub for collecting and managing maritime data, navigation charts, oceanographic information, and sea weather forecasts. It will also support ship safety, monitor tides along Somalia’s coast, and strengthen maritime security.
SOHO is set to become the largest ocean data and hydrographic research facility in the country, contributing significantly to the protection of Somalia’s coastline and the sustainable use of its marine resources.
This national project is being implemented through a technical partnership, with plans to provide advanced training and modern equipment to enhance ship safety, coastal security, maritime capacity, and the efficient management of Somalia’s ocean resources.
