Mogadishu (Sahan Post) – Former Somali President Mohamed Abdullahi Farmaajo, who has been abroad for an extended period, arrived this morning at Aden Adde International Airport in Mogadishu.
Unlike his previous homecomings, Farmaajo’s return was marked by a noticeably subdued reception. According to reports, a government directive had ordered a scaled-down welcoming ceremony, citing concerns over public safety and security in the capital.
Once known for his widespread popularity and large public gatherings, Farmaajo’s arrival this time drew little public fanfare.
Sources indicate that the former president is expected to hold consultative meetings in Mogadishu and attend an upcoming political conference in Kismayo, the interim capital of Jubbaland.
Farmaajo’s return comes at a critical political moment, with only a few months remaining before the terms of the current federal institutions and parliament expire—amid growing uncertainty over the framework and timeline for Somalia’s next elections.
In recent weeks, Somalia and neighboring countries have witnessed a flurry of political meetings and alliance-building efforts, as key stakeholders position themselves ahead of the impending Somali election period.
