Mogadisho (Sahan Post):- The United States Embassy in Mogadishu has announced that Somalia’s electronic visa system (E-Visa) has been hacked, resulting in the theft of personal information belonging to nearly 35,000 applicants, including American citizens.
According to a statement published on the Embassy’s official website, the compromised data includes applicants’ photographs, home addresses, email contacts, places of birth, and dates of birth.
The Embassy warned that the exposed information poses significant risks to the personal security and privacy of those affected. It urged all American citizens who previously used the Somali E-Visa system to be vigilant and watch out for fraudulent attempts, including phishing messages or other suspicious communications.
The Government of Somalia has not yet issued an official statement on the incident. However, reports indicate that investigations are underway to determine who carried out the breach and where the stolen data may have been disseminated.
Somalia’s E-Visa platform was launched recently with the aim of simplifying the visa application process. The breach, however, has raised serious concerns regarding the security and protection of applicants’ personal data.
