Prime Minister Hamza Lays Foundation Stone for New National Agricultural Research Institute

Mogadishu (Sahan Post) :– Somalia’s Prime Minister Hamza Abdi Barre on Sunday laid the foundation stone for a new National Agricultural Research Institute, saying the facility will help train a new generation of Somali agricultural experts critical to boosting the country’s farm productivity.

Barre said agricultural development is essential to Somalia’s economic future, describing the sector as the “backbone” of the national economy and a key driver of livelihoods across the world. He noted that the government’s DanQaran agenda places strong emphasis on increasing domestic production at a time when global food security is under pressure due to export restrictions imposed by several countries.

Highlighting Somalia’s potential, the prime minister said the country is endowed with vast arable land and sufficient water resources if properly managed. Strengthening agricultural output, he said, could steer Somalia toward greater self-sufficiency — one of his administration’s top priorities.

Barre praised the Ministry of Agriculture and Irrigation for its efforts to organize farmers and strengthen cooperatives, urging greater investment in farmer education and outreach. He also called on Somali businesses to reassess their investment priorities and channel more resources into local production.

Somalia’s strategic geographic position, Barre added, has attracted growing interest from countries seeking investment opportunities, particularly in agriculture and livestock. Reviving the country’s agricultural production capacity, he said, could significantly transform the economy and enhance national food security.
