Kismayo (Sahan Post) — Jubaland’s Vice President, Mahmoud Sayid Aadan, has called for an urgent national conference to address widening political divisions within Somalia’s governance institutions. In a statement issued Monday, he said the country’s political climate remains fragile and requires collective, inclusive solutions rooted in consultation and national unity.
Aadan noted that although Somalia has overcome layers of political crises over the years, personal and factional interests continue to overshadow the national good. He warned that this trend is undermining state-building efforts and slowing progress toward stable, functional governance.
The Jubaland deputy leader proposed convening an unconditional, all-inclusive meeting of the National Consultative Council (NCC) to engage in frank discussions on contentious national issues. He argued that such a gathering could pave the way for compromises and decisions capable of easing tensions and aligning political actors.
He also urged efforts to reassure and engage presidential contenders ahead of the 2026 elections, saying they must be included in discussions related to key political decisions, particularly those issued by the NCC, given their impact on Somalia’s political direction.
In his concluding message, Aadan appealed directly to President Hassan Sheikh Mohamud to take bold, unifying leadership steps and champion genuine dialogue. He stressed that Somalia today needs leadership that brings citizens together and steers the country toward stability and lasting statehood.
