Garowe, Puntland – (Sahan Post) — Leaders from the capital cities of Somalia’s Federal Member States arrived yesterday in Garowe, the administrative capital of Puntland, for a multi-day conference aimed at strengthening urban development initiatives across the country.
The conference, which officially opened today, brings together delegations from Mogadishu, Baidoa, Kismayo, Beletweyne, and Dhusamareb. The event serves as a knowledge-sharing workshop for Somalia’s capital cities participating in the World Bank–funded Nagaad Project, an initiative designed to enhance urban resilience and infrastructure.
During their stay, delegates will study various World Bank–supported projects implemented in Garowe. The visiting teams will be briefed on completed and ongoing developments, including the city’s major water drainage project, which is currently under construction.
Garowe has been recognized as one of the most successful beneficiaries of World Bank urban development programs among Somalia’s capital cities, effectively utilizing funds to improve key public services and infrastructure.
The gathering in Garowe is expected to provide participating leaders with valuable experience in project management and urban development. The goal is to enable all Somali capital cities to align their urban planning and growth strategies with regional standards.
Somalia’s progress has long been hindered by decades of internal conflict, which severely damaged infrastructure, slowed economic development, and disrupted essential public services including healthcare and community safety.
