Garowe – Puntland Vice President Ilyaas Cismaan Lugatoor and other senior officials attended a ceremony last night in Garowe to sign a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) concerning the Abdullahi Yusuf Airport in Galkacyo.
The MoU was signed between the Puntland Ministry of Aviation and Airports and a private entity, the Gaalkayo Development Group (GDG). It outlines a framework for the construction and management of Gaalkacyo Airport, with the goal of upgrading the facility to international standards in compliance with aviation laws and regulations.
The Gaalkacyo airport development project, reportedly backed by an investment of $17 million, will include the construction of a 3.5-kilometer runway, a passenger terminal, a taxiway, an aircraft apron, and an air traffic control tower.
Furthermore, the agreement is projected to catalyze expanded investment opportunities, stimulate local economic growth, and generate new employment, delivering direct benefits to the residents of Galkacyo and the wider region.
Officials present at the signing emphasized that public-private partnerships are a vital pillar for national infrastructure development. They affirmed the Puntland government’s commitment to implementing this agreement efficiently, transparently, and for maximum public benefit.
