African Union and United Nations Reaffirm Strategic Partnership for Peace, Security, and Sustainable Development

New York, (Sahan Post):— The African Union (AU) and the United Nations (UN) have reaffirmed their longstanding partnership as a foundation for global peace, security, and sustainable development during the Ninth AU–UN Annual Conference, co-chaired by H.E. Mahmoud Ali Youssouf, Chairperson of the African Union Commission, and H.E. António Guterres, Secretary-General of the United Nations, at UN Headquarters in New York.

Both leaders expressed grave concern over escalating conflicts, humanitarian crises, and violations of international law, stressing the importance of political solutions through preventive diplomacy, mediation, and dialogue.

The Conference reviewed progress under the three AU–UN Frameworks on peace and security, development, and human rights, reaffirming joint efforts to support African-led peace processes in Sudan, South Sudan, Somalia, Libya, the Great Lakes Region, the Sahel, and the Horn of Africa.

Delegates emphasized the need for predictable and sustainable financing for AU-led peace support operations in line with UN Security Council Resolution 2719 (2023), and called for the accelerated implementation of the AU–UN Roadmap. The discussions also advanced collaboration on digital transformation, climate action, and inclusive development, referencing initiatives such as the Digital Transformation Strategy for Africa, the G20 AI for Africa Initiative, and the outcomes of the Second Africa Climate Summit.

Both organizations underscored the vital roles of women and youth in peacebuilding and sustainable growth, welcoming the AU’s Convention on Ending Violence Against Women and Girls as a historic milestone.

The AU and UN concluded by agreeing to hold the Tenth Annual Conference in 2026 in Addis Ababa, Ethiopia, reaffirming their shared commitment to deepen strategic cooperation for the advancement of Africa and the global community.
