African Union’s Somalia Mission Granted Extension

New York – The United Nations Security Council has agreed to extend the mandate of the African Union Transition Mission in Somalia (ATMIS) until December 31, 2026.

ATMIS is a peacekeeping mission under the African Union, established to support Somalia’s security transition, stabilize the country, and combat Al-Shabaab.

Additionally, the Security Council decided that the United Nations Assistance Mission in Somalia (UNSOM) will begin a phased transition and close its mandate in October of next year.

This decision signifies that UNSOM will continue to provide international support for Somalia’s security and political processes, while simultaneously creating a pathway for Somalia to fully assume management of the country’s governance and stability.

UNSOM is the leading United Nations office for political and security matters, representing the Secretary-General.
