Dakar (Sahan Post): Benin’s Minister of Interior, Alassane Seidou, has confirmed that an attempted military coup by elements within the country’s armed forces has been foiled.
Earlier this morning, soldiers appeared on Benin’s national television and radio stations, announcing that they had taken control of the country and deposed President Patrice Talon. They also declared the dissolution of all political parties and announced the closure of national borders.
However, in a later statement, Interior Minister Seidou said the attempt had been unsuccessful and that national security forces had restored full control of the country. He emphasized that President Patrice Talon remains firmly in charge.
Security forces have arrested the soldiers involved in the attempted coup, with at least 13 individuals detained—mostly active-duty personnel, except for one who was previously a member of the Benin military.
West African nations have in recent years experienced a wave of military takeovers, as several countries undergo political shifts linked to renewed calls for Pan-Africanism and dissatisfaction with existing civilian governments.
