Communities in Shinbiraale and Surrounding Areas Announce Local Measures to Protect Environment and Security

Shinbiraale (Sahan Post) – Residents of Shinbiraale, Khayr, and Daaru Salaam in western Sanaag region have independently adopted a set of community-led decisions aimed at protecting the environment and strengthening local security.

Local elders and community leaders, who convened to discuss the matter, announced that cutting trees, producing charcoal, and the use of various intoxicants have been completely banned across their areas.

According to the participants, the decisions were driven by the need to prevent environmental degradation, particularly deforestation caused by charcoal production, and to curb the growing security challenges and social problems linked to the use of alcohol and other narcotics.

The Sanaag and Haylaan regions have long maintained strict environmental protection practices, including widespread bans on tree cutting, charcoal production, and the harvesting or export of local grasses.

Many young people who once relied on tree cutting and charcoal burning due to limited economic opportunities now work in the region’s expanding mining areas, where thousands of youth are seeking livelihoods.
