JIGJIGA (Sahan Post): — Ethiopia’s Human Rights Commission (EHRC) has announced the release of 121 people who had been held unlawfully in various police stations across the Somali Regional State. The commission also confirmed that two journalists serving court sentences were freed under a government pardon.
The EHRC said it has verified that the regional authorities have begun taking meaningful steps to improve the justice system, reduce prolonged detention without charge and enhance the welfare and rights of detainees.
However, the commission underscored that several unresolved issues still require urgent action. These include ensuring accountability for abuses linked to recent clashes in the Dewa’aley area along the Fafan–Jarar border, providing medical and livelihood support to communities affected by the violence, strengthening prisoners’ rights and access to justice, and ending prolonged detention without formal charges.
The report forms part of ongoing efforts to promote justice and human rights protections in Ethiopia’s Somali Region.
