Gaalkacayo, Mudug – (Sahan Post) — A large crowd gathered today at the Gaalkacayo cemetery to lay to rest Saabiriin Saylaan Cabdulle, who was killed on 12 November in Gaalkacayo. The funeral drew significant attendance, including senior regional officials, security commanders, religious leaders, elders, women, and hundreds of community members who came to express grief over the death of the 14-year-old orphan whose life was taken under tragic circumstances.
According to authorities, Saabiriin was killed by Hodon Maxamed Diiriye, a 34-year-old woman who reportedly employed her. On 24 November, the Gaalkacayo First-Instance Court sentenced Hodon to death under the principle of Somalias Punishable Law. Her husband, Cabdicasiis Xaashi, was sentenced to one year in prison and fined 500 USD. The court did not announce any additional suspects besides the convicted couple.
Saabiriin’s death has sparked widespread outrage across Somalia and among Somali communities abroad, highlighting rising concerns about violent crimes against women and children. Similar incidents in recent months have intensified public demands for greater protection, accountability, and social awareness.
On 31 October, an 8-year-old girl was raped and brutally assaulted in the Xingalool district of Sanaag, a case that has yet to receive justice. Less than two weeks earlier, on 12 October, a mother and her three daughters were killed in Qaayib, Galguduud region.
On 10 November, Daa’uud Maxamed Isxaaq, a man reportedly suffering from mental illness, was burned to death in a village near Wanlaweyn, Lower Shabelle. His killing followed clan-related violence that had already claimed 13 lives, including a family of three. Within 24 hours of Daa’uud’s death, retaliatory violence escalated when another village was set on fire.
Community leaders and rights advocates stress that such events demand urgent intervention, stronger preventive measures, and sustained public awareness to curb the growing number of violent crimes and human rights violations affecting innocent civilians.
