Hargeisa (Sahan Post) – Gunfire was heard on Monday near the entrance of Hargeisa’s Egal International Airport during the departure of former Somaliland President Muse Bihi Abdi, who was reportedly travelling to the United Arab Emirates.
According to initial reports, tensions arose after security personnel allegedly prevented Muse Bihi’s entry into the airport with plainclothes guards and vehicles. The situation reportedly escalated, leading to gunfire being heard in the vicinity. Sources say the former president eventually entered the airport on foot and was denied access to the VIP lounge.
Mubaarak Taani, the former presidential secretary, accused the Somaliland government of obstructing Muse Bihi’s travel. Writing on his Facebook page, he described the incident as “an act of intimidation,” adding that a swift response would follow.
Opposition parties Kulmiye and Kaah also condemned the events at Egal Airport, accusing the administration led by President Cirro of mishandling the situation. The Somaliland government has not yet commented on the incident or the allegations directed at it.
Sahan Post notes that, as of now, it cannot independently verify the exact reasons behind the obstruction of Muse Bihi’s departure.
