Ilhan Omar Responds Strongly to Trump’s Move to End TPS Protections for Somalis in Minnesota

Minneapolis (Sahan Post) — U.S. Congresswoman Ilhan Omar has issued a firm response to President Donald Trump’s recent remarks announcing the termination of Temporary Protected Status (TPS) for Somali nationals residing in Minnesota.

In a statement, Rep. Omar emphasized that the majority of Somali Americans — including herself — are U.S. citizens, and therefore would not be affected by the policy shift.

“Myself and most Somalis in America are citizens; the policy change will have no impact on us,” she said.

Her comments came shortly after President Trump claimed on social media that he had ended the TPS program, a federal protection that has shielded eligible Somali nationals from deportation due to ongoing instability and insecurity in Somalia.

The issue has quickly become one of the most heated political debates in the United States, particularly in Minnesota, home to the country’s largest Somali community.
