Residents of Mogadishu streamed into polling stations this Thursday morning for the long-awaited district council elections across Banadir region’s 16 districts.
These elections, which the opposition has criticized as one-sided, feature the participation of 20 political associations. The largest of these is the JSP, led by President Hassan Sheikh Mohamud.
Approximately half a million registered voters are expected to cast their ballots today at 523 designated polling centers across the city.
Security in Mogadishu has been significantly tightened, with restrictions placed on vehicular movement, flights, and educational activities.
