Puntland’s Bari Region Elders Call for Unity and Urgent Reforms in High-Stakes Communiqué

For the past few days, a meeting of the elders from the Bari region has been ongoing in the city of Bosaso. This meeting, which focused on the general situation of Puntland and specifically the Bari region, concluded after discussions and deliberations, resulting in the following points:

1. The Unity of the Somali People
The elders emphasized the need to preserve the togetherness and unity of the Somali people.They urged leaders at both the Federal and State Government levels to work for the interests of the people and to maintain the cohesion of the nation and its citizens.

2. The Situation in Puntland
The elders meeting in Bosaso addressed the situation in Puntland.They have been closely following the ongoing changes and propose that the influential elders of Puntland convene an urgent meeting to prepare for a comprehensive conference for the people of Puntland. This is due to the changes that have occurred to the foundational structure of Puntland, which was established with a shared history in 1998.

3. The Anti-Terrorism Operation in the Bari Region.
The elders commend the government’s operation in the Bari region,particularly in the Cal Miskaad mountains. They pray to Allah for mercy for those who died in the operation and for a speedy recovery for the wounded. They also urge the Puntland government to care for the wounded and the families of the soldiers who were martyred.

4. The Complaint of the Fishermen on the Coasts of Puntland.
A major complaint has been raised from the coasts of Puntland.This complaint concerns the severe piracy being perpetrated off the coast of Puntland, which has devastated their property and livelihoods. Therefore, we propose to the government that immediate action be taken against the illegal piracy occurring off the coast of Puntland.

5. The Bossaso District.
We propose to the senior leaders of Puntland that they look into the complaints concerning water and electricity,which the public cannot afford. Furthermore, the elders propose to the Puntland leadership that the Bosaso municipality be granted the percentage share of the Bosaso Port revenue that it is entitled to, in order to address the garbage problems in the city of Bosaso.
