Sanaag Challenges as Deputy Prime Minister Oversees Handover at Somalia’s Ministry of Commerce and Industry

Mogadishu (Sahan Post) – Somalia’s Deputy Prime Minister, Mr. Salah Ahmed Jama, today presided over the official handover ceremony between the newly appointed Minister of Commerce and Industry, Mr. Jamal Mohamed Hassan, and the outgoing minister, Mr. Mahmoud Ahmed Aden (Geesood).

During the ceremony, the Deputy Prime Minister urged the new minister to uphold professionalism, transparency, and efficiency in the execution of his duties. He prayed for to grant him success in his new responsibilities, while also commending the former minister, Mr. Geesood, for his service and contributions during his tenure at the ministry.

Political Background of the New Minister

Mr. Jamal Mohamed Hassan has previously served twice as a minister in the Federal Government of Somalia. In the previous administration, he held the post of Minister of Planning, Investment, and International Cooperation, completing a full term in that role.

Jamal had also contested for the leadership of the North Eastern State (Waqooyi Bari) but was unsuccessful. Sources indicate that this political development later led to dialogue with the Federal Government, culminating in his current appointment as Minister of Commerce and Industry.

Outgoing Minister’s Political Engagement

On the other hand, former Minister Mahmoud Ahmed Aden (Geesood) had actively campaigned for extending the reach of the Federal Government into the Sanaag region. However, his efforts reportedly fell short after he failed to persuade local communities in Sanaag to support political arrangements linked to Sool. Prior to his dismissal, Geesood had also been a strong supporter of President Hassan Sheikh Mohamud’s political party.

Frequent Cabinet Changes Representing Sanaag

Mr. Jamal Mohamed Hassan becomes the third minister from the Sanaag region to hold a cabinet post during President Hassan Sheikh Mohamud’s current administration. Eight months ago, General Abdullahi Ahmed Jama “Ilka Jiir” was removed from his position as Minister of Ports and replaced by Mahmoud Geesood, who has now in turn been replaced by Jamal Mohamed Hassan.

Sanaag remains one of the regions facing significant political, developmental, and economic challenges, with most indicators of progress lagging far behind those of other regions in the country.
