Mogadishu (Sahan Post):- Senator Abdirahman Mohamed Faroole, who represents the Nugaal region, has renewed accusations against Mohamed Said Atom, the former resistance leader in the Galgala and Majayahan areas of Puntland.
Faroole accused Atom of being responsible for the deaths of more than 180 people during the clashes in the Galgala mountains between 2006 and 2014. Atom, who currently resides in Qatar under political protection, has not publicly responded to the claims.
The conflict dates back to 2006, when the Puntland administration of President Adde Muse attempted to begin mining operations in the resource-rich Majayahan area of Sanaag. The project faced strong local resistance, led by Atom and other community members who opposed what they viewed as external exploitation of their land.
Renewed fighting erupted in 2009 under President Faroole’s administration, leading to widespread displacement and civilian casualties. Thousands of residents were forced to flee their homes, and local infrastructure suffered extensive damage.
Following sustained resistance from local communities, the Puntland authorities eventually halted the mining projectsin the region.
Senators representing Sanaag and Haylaan have so far not commented on Senator Faroole’s recent remarks, which some observers suggest may be linked to current political dynamics within the Puntland administration of President Said Abdullahi Deni.
