Somalia’s Future Council Once Again Rejects Mogadishu Election

MOGADISHU – The opposition “Future Council of Somalia” has reiterated its rejection of the upcoming election for the Benadir Regional District Council, scheduled for tomorrow, Thursday.

‎Members including former President Sheikh Sharif Sheikh Ahmed, former Prime Ministers Hassan Ali Khayre and Mohamed Hussein Roble, and Abdirahman Abdishakur, in a press conference held in Mogadishu, described the Mogadishu election as a unilateral process that cannot be called an election.

‎They stated they would not recognize the results of this election, characterizing it as being solely managed by President Hassan Sheikh Mohamud with no real competitors.

‎Among the accusations leveled by the opposition are that the company managing the election equipment is owned by members of President Hassan Sheikh’s JSP party, and that it is unclear who is actually being elected.

‎The Future Council of Somalia stated that what is happening in Mogadishu is not a legitimate election, but rather a process driven by a specific agenda related to extending time in power.
