Puntland detains at least nine individuals accused of organizing pro-Somaliland activities in Badhan

Bosaso (Sahan Post) – Reports from the town of Badhan in the Sanaag region indicate that several officials and employees appointed by the Somaliland administration have been arrested and transferred to prison in Bosaso, Bari region.

According to information obtained by Sahan Post, at least nine individuals linked to the Somaliland administration were taken into custody and moved to Bosaso Central Prison. The detainees reportedly include senior officials and civilian employees operating under Somaliland’s authority in Badhan.

Sources say those arrested were allegedly organizing a public event in support of the Somaliland administration, which was scheduled to take place at a local school in Badhan. Among those detained are Mohamed Jama Gele the Somaliland-appointed police commander for Badhan , Mohamed Said Haji and Abdirahman Isse Abdi teachers from the school where the event was to be held. Mohamed Abdi Tuluh a photographer, and several other individuals including a tradional elder named Mohamed Hirsi Mohamed.

The arrests come amid heightened political tensions in Sanaag, as the Somaliland administration is said to be pursuing plans aimed at separating Badhan from the rest of the Sanaag region. A day prior to the arrests, Somaliland appointed new district commissioners for Badhan and Las Qoray. However, it has been confirmed that these newly appointed officials were not among those detained, having reportedly fled the area before security forces arrived.

This marks the first known instance in which Puntland authorities have taken direct action against Somaliland-appointed officials and supporters operating in the Sanaag region, highlighting the intensifying political.
