Boorama, Awdal Region (Sahan Post) – At least two people have been confirmed dead and over 11 others injured in violent clashes that erupted last night in Boorama, the capital of the Awdal region in Somaliland. The violence follows widespread unrest triggered by the government’s approval of a controversial book release on the Xeerka Ciise (The Isse Law), a decision that has sparked tension among local communities.
The clashes are primarily fueled by opposition to the book’s contents, which some groups in the region believe could pave the way for land expansion and potentially ignite further clan-based conflicts in the area. Many residents view the government’s endorsement of the book as a provocative move that could alter the region’s social and political landscape.
Political Leaders Hold Government Accountable
Mohamed Abiib, a member of parliament representing the area affected by the unrest, has strongly criticized the Somaliland government under President Muse Bihi Abdi. He accused the administration of escalating tensions by deploying military forces to Boorama, adding that these forces have exacerbated existing grievances among the local population.
“The government is fully responsible for what has transpired in Boorama,” Abiib declared. “The deployment of military forces to the city has only intensified the suffering of the local community, who have long voiced their concerns.”
Opposition Parties Call for Dialogue and Immediate Action
The crisis has drawn the attention of Somaliland’s opposition parties, with both the Kaah and Kulmiye parties calling for immediate de-escalation. Leaders from these parties have urged the government to halt the controversial book’s promotion and avoid using military force against civilians.
Mohamed Kaahin, the chairman of the Kulmiye party, emphasized the importance of resolving the crisis through peaceful dialogue rather than military action. “As Somalilanders, our legacy is peace and stability. This issue should be resolved through discussion, not through force or violence,” Kaahin stated.
Similarly, Maxamuud Xaashi, the leader of the Kaah party, called for an immediate cessation of the book’s release. He blamed the government for the violence and demanded that the book’s publication be suspended until further dialogue could take place.
A Divisive Issue for Somaliland
The controversy surrounding the Xeerka Ciise has underscored deep divisions within the country, particularly in regions like Awdal, where many local communities have expressed concerns about the potential impact on their land rights and political autonomy. The law’s implications for territorial disputes and clan rivalries are seen as a significant threat to the region’s fragile peace.
As tensions remain high, many are calling for calm and urging the Somaliland government to prioritize dialogue and reconciliation in order to prevent further bloodshed. The situation in Boorama is still unfolding, and local leaders are pushing for an urgent resolution to avoid further loss of life.
