The strengthening relationship between Ethiopia and Somalia

The Ankara agreement that was signed between Ethiopia and Somalia on December 12, 2024 has greatly improved the bilateral relations between the two countries.

‎Despite the third party efforts have been made to strengthen the relationship between the two countries following Ethiopia’s demand to exit the Red Sea, but the two countries that have blood ties other than foreign countries have come to a better path.

‎Due to the pressure from the third party, Somalia’s position has come to the right path because of the Ankara agreement that Turkey has strong relations with the two countries.

‎Since Somalia has expressed that it will accept Ethiopia’s request to exit the Red Sea because it is valid, Ethiopia has agreed to continue its request for a sea gate by respecting the unity of Somalia’s state.

‎After that, the two countries have agreed to strengthen their historical relationship and contribute to the lasting peace. Following this, the two nations have strengthened their full diplomatic relations and discussed frequently at the level of leaders.

‎The president of Somalia Hassan Sheikh Mohammed has been visiting Addis Ababa frequently and made a working visit. Prime Minister Abiy Ahmed (Dr) has made a working visit to Mogadishu.

‎The leaders have agreed to work to strengthen security cooperation and to fight the terrorism that we are under threat in the joint press release.

‎Expanding infrastructure links and strengthening economic relations, trade and investment are the issues the two countries are working on.

‎The president of Somalia Hassan Sheikh Mohammed is one of the leaders who attended the inauguration of the great Ethiopian Renaissance Dam. His invitation to cut the ribbon of the dam is a sign of the improvement of the relationship.

‎The president has raised many issues concerning Ethiopia in his recent visit with Al-Arabia. In his opinion regarding the great Ethiopian Renaissance Dam, he has made it clear that the dam will not hurt anyone.

‎He mentioned that Ethiopia is a long-term neighbor that shares a long border with them. He pointed out that the development of Ethiopia will benefit Somalia.

‎President Hassan Sheikh who mentioned that Ethiopia’s Red Sea question is also valid, has pointed out that no one should get into conflict because of this.

‎The president had a working visit to Ethiopia yesterday and discussed with Prime Minister Abiy Ahmed (Dr.) and assured that he will work with Ethiopia to strengthen peace and stability.

‎The leaders have agreed to strengthen their cooperation in economy, investment and trade, to create strong economic cooperation, widen infrastructure lines that will enhance their trade ties and ensure their mutual prosperity.
